In 2011 the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), asked photographer Mike St Maur Sheil to create their WW1 centenary book “For the Fallen”. In the course of this work he journeyed over 20,000 miles and visited 400 cemeteries around the world.
In this talk he will seek to explain how the vision of the men who established the CWGC, over a hundred years ago, still manifests itself in our annual collective commemoration on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. His talk will not just be about gravestones in cemeteries as Mike will tell the stories of some of the men buried in these ‘cities of the silent dead’ and the lessons to be learnt from their example.
And as his previous talks in Ramsden have revealed, his photography is exceptional in its ability to capture the emotion aroused by the landscapes of battle so please come and join us for what promises to be a fascinating and thought provoking evening.
